September 1, 2025 | This board member is seeking re-election

Re-Election Letter:

I am seeking re-election to my current position of Vice President of Business and Finance .

• I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the board and members of MBEA during my years of service. I have kept accurate records throughout the years. The books have balanced every month to the penny during my terms. The auditor found nothing wrong with the books every year during my terms.

• I taught Business and Technology classes at the college level for over 25 years. I also taught workshops for fellow instructors. I worked on writing curriculum and rewriting curriculum often in a team setting. When students were having trouble learning in the traditional classroom setting, I worked on a team to create a more lab type situation for the students. The students and other instructors enjoyed the different teaching/learning environment and the students’ learning, and classroom attendance improved. I became very proficient in Access and Excel and often had instructors coming to me with Access and Excel questions, even from other departments. I even heard a few instructors refer to me as the “Access Queen”. I’m not sure I deserved the “Queen” designation, but I did appreciate the sentiment.

• I enjoyed working on registration for both the summer workshops and the fall conferences and am looking forward to continuing working on registrations. I have worked with, and am working with, the web designer to try and make the registration process as easy and as smooth as possible.

• I look forward to continuing to serve on the MBEA executive board and in serving the MBEA membership as we strive to continue to promote Business Education. I would appreciate your support.

About Joyce Newtown:

"I have served on the MBEA Board since the fall of 2014. I started my career as an elementary school teacher after receiving my B.A. from the University of Michigan–Flint.

After teaching for a short time, I went back to school and earned my A.B. in Data Processing from Baker College of Flint. I began teaching adults and later earned my M.A. in Educational Psychology with a Technical Concentration from Eastern Michigan University.

I spent most of my career teaching at Baker College of Port Huron, where I taught both computer and business classes. I also served on numerous committees focused on course content and curriculum development.

I have a cat named Peanut, and I love to travel, read books, do puzzles, and craft. I’ve been to 46 of the 50 states—and I’m working on completing the list!"
